family law act 1975

family law act 1975
Leglislation laws: can anyone give me a brief explanation of the following laws?

It’s for my business studies coursework, so I can decide which of these laws will apply to my business.

•The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
•Consumer Protection Act 1987.
•Minimum Wage Act 1998.
•Race Relations Act 1976.
•Work and Families Act 2006.
•Sex Discrimination Act 1975.
•Age discrimination act 2006.

thank you for your help
p.s. if you don’t know them all, just answer the ones you do know.

ALL of these laws apply to you and your business, no matter what that business may be.

Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 spells out companies’ responsibilities to their employers, and customers, in terms of managing risks. You must deal with and remove risks which are an obviously foreseeable danger to the health and safety of people, no matter who they are. Breaches resulting in injury, or even death, can be prosecuted under this Act.

Consumer Protection Act 1987 makes suppliers of a product, or anyone giving it a commercial endorsement, legally liable for damage arising from defects of the product.

Race Relations Act 1976 and Sex Discrimination Act 1975 make it an offence to discriminate of the grounds of race or gender, to treat someone less favourably on these grounds, such as by denying them employment, where such discrimination cannot be shown to be justifiable. But it MAY conceivably be possible to advertise vacancy specifically for a man, a woman, a black man, a white man etc, if the job is exempted from these acts, such as a female toilet attendant, or a specific role for an actor, requiring a person of a particular colour (eg Othello must be black)

The Minimum Wage Act 1998 ensures all workers are paid the current legal national mimimum wage for their age group, the current wage being updated periodically by Statutory Instrument by the Secretary of State.

There is no “Age Discrimination Act 2006″, but there is the “Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006″ – secondary legislation, not an Act of Parliament, but SI’s are still law. This SI is made under the framework outlined in the European Communities Act 1972, and approved in Parliament. This makes discrimination on the grounds of age the same as if it were on the grounds of sex or colour.
